During our hiking routes you have the opportunity to explore one of the most famous and breathtaking locations in Greece and UNESCO World Heritage monuments, located next to Meteora in central Thessaly. Theopetra Cave is only 3km south from the town. The formation of the limestone rock has been dated to the upper cretaceous period thousand years ago. The site has become increasingly important as human presence is attributed to all periods of the Middle and Upper Paleolithic, the Mesolithic, Neolithic and beyond, bridging the Pleistocene with the Holocene. Also the river of Pineios and the Pindus Mountains are pretty remarkable. The unique complexity of the huge columns of rock creates an immersive archeological site of cultural evolution throughout the centuries. On top of these gigantic rocks there are monasteries of great history with their origins trailing back to the 14th century.
There are several routes in the surrounding area ranging in difficulty (easy, advanced and challenging) .Most of them last around 4hours plus.In general, Meteora is suitable for walking, with nature impressing even the most demanding visitor. As you will see, the trails get affected by the weather conditions. An easy hiking route that you can follow is the Adrachti trail, 850m away. The path starts from Kastraki and crosses the old Kastraki to the church of Agios Nikolaos. From there to the old Panagia passes through wooden stairs, while just before the rock Adrachti, the path becomes dirt. The view of Meteora from Adrachti is simply wonderful.
Α medium hiking route is the path of Holy Spirit
The mark of the beginning of the path is set from Kastraki square, with a highly visible sign located north of the square, on the right of a distinctive big old building. From there it continues with green circles in all-important spots (crossings etc.). The path initially crosses the alleys of old Kastraki up to the water fountain of Neraida. The path from the water fountain up to the broken rocks is made of soil an continues mainly as rocky. The trail, after an hour of hiking, leads to the breathtaking hermitage of the Holy Spirit, which is carved inside the rock. The bell tower is located on a rock with a unique view.
One challenging ascent from the village of Kori to the eastern slopes through a wonderful deciduous forest initially at Trypio Lithari. Shortly before Trypio Lithari the path passes through a small but demanding gutter with a large slope. When there is no snow with a little care it is easily passed. With snow it requires a winter mountain experience.Trypio Lithari is a focal point of the mountain below the eastern slopes of the peak.
Below we will present the milestones of an alternative easy path which lasts around 2 hours. Gorgogiri is located about 20 km from Trikala at an altitude of 450-600 m. It is a magical place with wonderful images of nature, which looks like taken from the pages of a fairy tale.
The images that make up this place are just wonderful. Rich fauna, aromatic medicinal plants, mushrooms, fruit trees, plane trees and the roar of water echoing in the area compose the puzzle of wild beauty around Kefalopotamos. Kefalopotamos and the riparian forest of Paleokopri Lakka (3 km from the village) as well as the Gavros spring are habitats. Kefalopotamos of Gorgogyri springs from Koziakas about 1500 meters above the village, while the local people organize short getaways. The waters rush down from the peaks of Koziakas and pass outside the villages of Gorgogiri and Xyloparoiko, in Trikala. Along the way from its springs to the village there is a rich riparian vegetation of wild plane trees while in its waters – according to the testimonies of the inhabitants of the area – there are fish such as brianas, mullets and tiles.
One of the easy paths, which was formed several years ago, starts from Gorgogiri, continues along the river and ends at its springs, offers a wonderful route for those who love hiking and contact with nature. Somewhere along the way of the magical route, one will meet the 4-meter-high painted on the trunk of a fallen tree and cultures made by wood artists. After the extent of the issue, many are those who rush to visit the area to see it up close and take pictures with it. In recent years, the area is part of a promotion plan through the creation of the “Digital Asclepieion” in the roots of Koziakas with the brand name Asclepius.
